The INFO post!
Ok, so we've been getting a lot of questions around logistics for travel, accommodations, etc. so I wanted to get my butt in gear and actually do a straight up info post...BUT I just couldn't get right into it until I told you guys a little story about Gary and I's travel adventures over the holidays...
So this Christmas we spent here with my family, but on boxing day we flew out to PEI for one of my best friend's weddings...the trip was fantastic and we had a great time, but the biggest adventure of this trip, and any trip we take together for that matter, was Gary getting me from point A to point B without FLIPPING OUT, and going into an old fashion Meister rant. (My dad and I are both known for these...it's a true talent that I am very proud of).
You see, one of my biggest pet peeves in life is when people aren't happy at their job and then proceed to take it out on everyone around them including their clients...Now i'm the first to admit, i've been in jobs i've hated before and sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, but it's still your responsibility to make it LOOK like you don't hate it when dealing with the public....Which brings me to Air Canada....
Obviously the rest of the population doesn't share my same feelings because Air Canada still exists... (I apologize in advance to anyone who works for them or knows people who do...I realize it's a blanket statement but i'm sticking with it)
Due to my last experience of two cancelled flights with them I absolutely refused to book with AC for our December trip, even though having to go with WestJest meant a layover each way, hotel room costs and late night travel...(Enter Meister stubbornness...another trait i'm very proud of). The only glitch in my amazing plan to really stick it to Air Canada by having them loose two customers (cause we all know that really hit em' where it hurts), is that apparently WestJet is competing with them for the servicer of the year award...Now keep in mind while I write this, I do admit that it all took place after a very turbulent flight, and I am NOT a fan of flying in the first place...
At one point while we were sitting on the Toronto tarmac the flight attendant announced we were all to wait on the plane for others to board as they want a quick turnaround to catch up on time...To my relief because that meant we'd just get this roller coaster flight over with quicker. But then literally 2 min later, she came back on and said if anyone wanted coffee we had at least an hour to get off and get one...
"Well i'm confused as that sounds like a conflicting statement" you might say...So i got up and fumbled through the line of people trying to get off the plane and asked for clarification as I was a bit confused...are we supposed to stay on board because we're taking off right away, or do we have over an hour wait to go get coffee? The response? "Well that's sort of up to you m'am...get off or stay on." Dead silence....
Okaaaay...I guess we'll go get coffee? So we haul ourselves and all our camera gear off the plane and I go to the front counter to ask what time we should be back to re-board. There's 4 employees at the desk. I wait patiently. One is typing, another is pointing at the screen and the other two are discussing the "crazy things Amy pulled off on new years...it was unbelievable". I shift over a bit hoping to get in line of sight better (keeping in mind i'm 1.5 feet from the desk so it's not a stretch to know i'm standing there). BUT WAIT...Amy was up to some CRAZY stuff people! Surely they had to finish their conversation before acknowledging a customer! A line up forms behind me...people are sighing loudly in frustration. Finally, I pipe up..."Excuse me, i'm just wondering what time we need to be back to board?. They look up...Response: "20 min? 10 min? Something like that...But seriously Amy...."
Oh goooood! 10 or 20 or something like that...awesome. I'll be sure to get back in time then.
So i'm hangry, tired, dealt with turbulence for 2 hours and now have gotten sass and zero help twice within 15 min....Enter a Brianne Meister rant on how "WestJet is just as bad as AirCanada, that lady was so rude, if you're that miserable, just find a new job, i don't care if there was a recession it's still not an excuse to make everyone miserable around you, now we might as well have gone Air Canada anyway"...etc etc etc. on the way to Tim Hortons because it was 10-20 min away from the gate.
*Hanger Definition: a state of anger that occurs when one is extremely hungry...a very serious and dangerous condition
Meanwhile Gary's walking beside me in silence lugging camera gear towards the line up, when finally he pipes in: "Ughhhhh Look...We're here, we're on this airline whether you like it or not and maybe it's time to just suck it up and deal with it. I'll take a bagel with cream cheese."
Dead silence....
And at that moment I envisioned taking his bagel with cream cheese and chucking it at his head, but it still made me realize my hanger was making me just as bad as the crappy flight attendants...DAMN IT Gary was right...
SO I quietly ate my Tim's and waited for the flight to be over...the joys of traveling...Marriage prep #345.

I have some fantastic news for you...there is one amazing airline left in this world and it just so happens to be our local one! AIR NORTH
They fly out of Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton so I really suggest if you can get on a flight with them to do it! They have amazing service and even still serve food including cheesecake for desert!!
I'm currently looking into getting some group travel rates, so i'll be updating this as soon as I hear back but I think we'll be able to get you guys a TRAVEL CODE so you can receive 10% off your flights! Also, if another airline has a cheaper price (the only other one that flies here is Air Canada so beware), you can just tell AIR NORTH that and they normally will match the price.

DRIVING
Ok for those of you adventurous types, the drive up here may take a while but it's DEFINITELY worth the trip! The scenery is gorgeous, you're guaranteed to see wildlife, but just be aware that there are long stretches in between Gas Stations so fill up as often as you can!
Alaska highway is the most common route as it's the best kept...the Stuart Cassier (west from Prince George instead of North) is much more scenic, but definitely has more pot holes and tricky spots...
Just keep in mind, it's about 10 hours from Ft. Nelson to Whitehorse just to give ya some perspective. It's an incredible, once in a life time trip if you do have the time though, so let us know if you need more info/tips on where to stop along the way!
ACCOMODATION
There's a few different options to look into. We have plenty of hotels and B&B's of which i've listed a few below. I do suggest calling ASAP as June can be a busy month here. If you're into Camping or will be staying in a motorhome there's also a campground within a 5 min walk from downtown and plenty of RV parks around as well.

High Country Inn-Great rooms, and even greater patio which serves our amazing Yukon Brewing Beer and Bison Burgers. This is our regular stop after bike rides when we need to 're-fuel'
